Red Vinyl, 140 Gram, Limited Edition, 12-Page Booklet And 5×7 Mini Poster

The red pressing of the first album Alison Brown and Steve Martin made together, on 140 gram vinyl in a single jacket with a printed inner sleeve, a twelve-page booklet, a five-by-seven mini poster and a digital download card. The jacket back carries a mock warning label: "CAUTION — UNSAFE INSENSIBLE INSANE — PLAY RESPONSIBLY."

It was cut live at Compass Sound Studio, the studio at Compass Records' Nashville headquarters, which Brown owns and runs with her husband, the bassist Garry West. The two of them produced. More than two dozen roots players appear across twelve songs, among them Sam Bush on mandolin and Stuart Duncan on fiddle, with Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hull also credited.

Eight of the twelve carry a guest: Tim O'Brien, Della Mae, Aoife O'Donovan with Sarah Jarosz, the trio of Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker and John Doyle, Jason Mraz, Jackson Browne with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna, Indigo Girls — Amy Ray and Emily Saliers trading lead vocals on "Girl, Have Money When You're Old" — and Vince Gill. "New Cluck Old Hen" reworks a century-old Appalachian banjo tune; "Michael" runs on bossa nova. "Dear Time" started from an idea Martin brought in as he approached eighty, and its video was shot at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, where both he and Jackson Browne began in the 1960s and where Brown later played as a teenager.

The two first wrote together on "Foggy Morning Breaking", from Brown's 2023 album On Banjo, which went to number one on the Bluegrass Today and Grassicana charts. This album debuted at number one on Billboard's Bluegrass chart — Martin's seventh consecutive genre number one since 2009 — and "5 Days Out, 2 Days Back" drew three 2025 IBMA nominations, for Song of the Year, Collaborative Performance of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Brown and Martin co-hosted that year's IBMA Awards.

Brown won the Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance in 2001 and was IBMA Banjo Player of the Year in 1991, the first woman to take an instrumentalist award there; she co-founded Compass Records with West in 1995 and has twelve solo albums. Martin has five Grammys, among them Best Bluegrass Album in 2009 for The Crow, and was IBMA Entertainer of the Year in 2011; the Steve Martin Banjo Prize he founded in 2010 has awarded more than $500,000.

Compass first issued the album on 17 October 2025.
