Verve By Request Series 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the black vinyl edition of Ptah, The El Daoud from Verve By Request, the reissue line that Verve Records/UMe and Third Man Records revived as a vinyl series in October 2022. The relaunch began on November 11, 2022 with two records tied to Detroit, Third Man's home city: this one and Roy Brooks' Beat from 1964. The partners announced the series as new remasters from original analog sources where available, on 180-gram vinyl pressed at Third Man Pressing in Detroit, with two titles a month chosen by Verve and Third Man.

Reissue mastering was done at Sterling Sound, and the record comes in a gatefold jacket. Verve sold this black pressing; a yellow Third Man Edition in a screen-printed jacket was a separate variant, sold only through Third Man's storefronts and uDiscover. The label catalog number is B0036051-01, and the jacket reproduces the original Impulse! issue, AS-9196.

Alice Coltrane recorded the album in a single session on January 26, 1970, in the studio at the Coltrane home in Dix Hills, New York, and Impulse! released it later that year with Ed Michel producing. She wrote all four compositions. Pharoah Sanders and Joe Henderson play tenor saxophone on the title track and "Mantra," then both move to alto flute on "Blue Nile," where Coltrane trades piano for harp. Ron Carter is on bass and Ben Riley on drums, and the two saxophonists hold fixed positions in the stereo image: Sanders on the right channel, Henderson on the left. It was her first record to feature wind players this extensively.

The title honors Ptah, the Egyptian god; "El Daoud" means "the beloved" in Arabic. Ramakrishna, named in the second track, was a 19th-century Bengali Hindu mystic. AllMusic's Stacia Proefrock called it "a truly great album," and the Penguin Guide to Jazz gave it three stars out of four.
