180-Gram Black Vinyl LP, All-Analog Centennial Reissue

Craft Recordings issued this edition of Born Under A Bad Sign in April 2023 to mark Albert King's centennial. Jeff Powell cut the lacquers at Take Out Vinyl straight from the original stereo tapes, keeping the chain all-analog, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. The jacket reproduces the original Stax artwork and carries catalog number CR00513.

It was King's first album for Stax. The label assembled it in August 1967 from five sessions held at its Memphis studio between March 1966 and June 1967, collecting the singles "Laundromat Blues," "Crosscut Saw" and the title track, all three of which reached the Hot R&B Singles chart. Booker T. & the M.G.'s were the house band behind him, with Booker T. Jones on keyboards, Steve Cropper on rhythm guitar, Donald Dunn on bass and Al Jackson Jr. on drums, and Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love of the Memphis Horns played on the sessions. Jim Stewart is credited as producer.

William Bell and Booker T. Jones wrote the title track, which Cream and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band both went on to record. The album also carries Leiber and Stoller's "Kansas City," Ray Noble's "The Very Thought of You" and King's own "Down Don't Bother Me." It has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame, added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry, and named by Rolling Stone among its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

King grew up on a Mississippi cotton plantation and taught himself on a guitar built from a cigar box. Left-handed, he played a right-handed guitar turned upside down, most famously a Gibson Flying V.
