180-Gram Black Vinyl LP, Verve By Request Series

Verve Records reissued Love Cry on September 8, 2023 as part of its Verve By Request series, pressing it on 180-gram black vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit. Kevin Reeves cut the LP master at East Iris Studios in Nashville, and Ken Druker supervised the reissue. The record ships in a gatefold jacket with a plain white inner sleeve, and the jacket and labels keep the original Impulse! design and its A-9165 number alongside the reissue catalog number, B0037681-01.

Impulse! first issued the album in 1968. Bob Thiele produced the sessions at Capitol Studios in New York, held on August 31, 1967 and February 13, 1968, with Albert Ayler on tenor and alto saxophone and voice, Donald Ayler on trumpet, Alan Silva on bass, Milford Graves on drums and Call Cobbs on electric harpsichord. Every composition is Ayler's own. It is the last recording the Ayler brothers made together; Donald left the band shortly after and went home to Cleveland.

Verve's notes describe a set that mixes Ayler's free jazz with nursery rhythms and brass band marches. Writing in Burning Ambulance, Phil Freeman points out that "Ghosts" and "Bells" had first been cut for ESP-Disk in longer, more furious versions, and are reworked here as short statements of melody. "Universal Indians," closing side B, runs close to ten minutes, the longest piece on the record.
