The standard CD edition of I Must Be Dreaming, issued by Island Records on August 28, 2026 in a jewel case. The album's other physical formats are Sky Blue and Daydream Yellow vinyl pressings and a cassette.

It is the band's first album since Sound & Color in 2015, made by Brittany Howard on vocals and guitar, Heath Fogg on guitar and Zac Cockrell on bass. Shawn Everett, a repeat collaborator, returned to co-produce with the three of them, and Island's notes describe a record leaning toward "a viscerally charged form of psychedelic soul." All eleven songs are credited to Cockrell, Fogg and Howard, with Paul Horton also credited on "Tea Time."

The band played a one-off reunion show in Tuscaloosa in December 2024 and toured in 2025 for the first time in eight years. "Another Life" was released as a single in August 2025, followed by "American Dream" in April 2026 and "I Feel Hope Coming" on July 10, 2026, three days after the album was announced. Howard has said the title carries a double meaning, pointing at both the chaos of the world and its beauty, and that "both those things can be true at once."
