Verve Vault Series 180 Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Verve Vault Series edition of Ahmad Jamal '73. It is an all-analog cut from the original master tapes, mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Optimal in Germany. Verve Label Group and UMe model the series packaging on the original LPs, and the center label carries the 20th Century design and the original catalog number, T-417.

Verve Vault began in 2025 as a reissue line drawn from the Verve and Impulse! catalogs, then widened in 2026 to Mercury, Decca and related imprints as one of the ways Verve marked its 70th anniversary. The 2026 titles carry a celebratory anniversary sticker. This record comes into the series through the 20th Century catalog now held in the Verve family.

20th Century first issued Ahmad Jamal '73 that same year. It was Jamal's first studio album for the label, and Verve's notes have him playing only the Fender Rhodes electric piano across the record, a real turn for a pianist who had played acoustic piano alone until 1970. Co-producer Richard Evans arranged and conducted an expanded orchestra of strings, voices and horns around him.

The program sets Jamal against the soul and funk of the day: War's "The World Is a Ghetto," a top-ten pop hit for War in 1973, Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," and Thom Bell and Linda Creed's "Children of the Night." Verve's notes describe "Sustah, Sustah" as spiritual jazz and call "Peace at Last" the album's funky centerpiece. Across his years with 20th Century, Jamal placed four albums on the American R&B charts, among them 1974's Jamalca, the record that followed this one.

Jamal, an NEA Jazz Master and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy recipient, led small groups for six decades. Ahmad Jamal '73 came between Outertimeinnerspace (1972) and Jamalca in his discography.
