This is the standard black vinyl edition of The Meaning of Flowers, Deutsche Grammophon catalog number 4869121: a single LP of twelve tracks. The album is also issued on purple vinyl and on CD, and Deutsche Grammophon's own store carries a limited Smokey Silver marbled pressing.

Agnes Obel wrote, arranged, recorded and produced the album in her own studio in Berlin. She sings, with some vocals pitch-shifted, and plays piano, keys and synths and works with samples; guest players add violin, viola, cello, bass, lap steel, harmonium, flute, saxophone, percussion and backing vocals. It is her first album since Myopia in 2020.

Deutsche Grammophon describes the record as shaped by the birth of her first child, and by themes of new beginnings, interconnectedness and metamorphosis. Its reference points include Hannah Arendt's idea of natality, Emanuele Coccia's writing on plants and metamorphosis, the poetry of Enheduanna, the earliest known named author, and the Danish pop of the 1980s and '90s. The album is dedicated to her daughter. Of the title track, Obel has said: "I wanted to see if I could get close to the feeling of a new beginning." "Laymelli" was the first single.

Born in Copenhagen in 1980 and now based in Berlin, Obel debuted in 2010 with Philharmonics, which reached No. 1 in Denmark and Belgium and was certified 6x Platinum in Denmark; she won five Danish Music Awards in 2011, including Best Album. Citizen of Glass received the IMPALA Album of the Year Award for 2016, and she signed to Deutsche Grammophon in 2018.
