What are Vinyl Records Made of?

How Are Vinyl Records Made?

Step 1: Record and Mix the Track

The process begins in a recording studio long before anyone's thinking about vinyl at all. The song is tracked, mixed, and turned into a digital recording or digital file, which then gets handed off for the next stage of the process. At this point it's still just audio, and not a "record" yet.

Step 2: Master the Recording

Step 3: Plate the Master and Make a Stamper

The lacquer master is delicate and one-of-a-kind, so it can't go anywhere near a pressing machine. Instead, it goes through a process that makes it tougher and repeatable.

First, the lacquer disc is immersed in a silver solution. This coats the grooves in a thin layer of metal that makes the surface conductive. Then it's moved into a nickel bath, sometimes called a nickel solution, where a thicker metal layer builds up over the silver coating. Once that layer is thick enough, it gets peeled away from the lacquer master. What's left is a metal negative of the original grooves, which means every bump is now a groove and every groove is now a bump.

That metal piece is known as one stamper, and it's the actual tool that presses vinyl in the next stage. One stamper can press numerous records before it begins to wear down, and this is why only one stamper is needed for a whole batch.

However, before a stamper goes anywhere near a pressing machine, it has to pass quality assurance. Any flaw on the stamper, no matter how small, will get pressed on every record it touches. Catching discrepancies here saves an entire run from turning into a stack of scrap vinyl.

Step 4: Press the Vinyl

Once the stamper gets to the pressing plant, it's put in the pressing machine together with a blob of PVC shaped like a hockey puck. The machine presses the record to an exact playing time and shape, cutting the spiral groove into the surface. Excess vinyl gets trimmed off the outer edge, and static charge is a common problem at this stage because freshly pressed vinyl easily attracts dust. Vinyl records can be pressed in various colors, but black is most common.

A single pressing plant can turn out several thousand records a day once everything's mass-produced and running smoothly, and each one gets a final check before it's packaged and shipped for vinyl sales.
