Black Vinyl Double LP in a Gatefold Jacket

This is the first black vinyl pressing of Cruel Country, Wilco's 12th studio album, issued by the band's own dBpm Records on January 20, 2023 under catalog number DBPM 001-22-A B LP. All 21 songs run across two LPs and four sides, and the sticker on the shrink-wrap bills it as the complete 2-disc, 21-track collection.

The gatefold package is the work of Grammy-winning designer Lawrence Azerrad. It carries band photos by Jamie Kelter Davis, printed inner sleeves and a fold-out sheet of perforated postcards.

The album itself arrived digitally on May 27, 2022, with physical formats held back by the supply chain crisis. Apart from a limited pre-release CD for Record Store Day that June, this vinyl edition and a standard retail CD were its first physical release.

Jeff Tweedy wrote every song. The six-piece lineup of Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Mikael Jorgensen, Pat Sansone and Nels Cline recorded them in February and March 2022 at The Loft, the band's Chicago studio, mostly as live takes with minimal overdubs. It was the first time all six had been in The Loft together since The Whole Love in 2011. Tweedy and Tom Schick produced, and Bob Ludwig mastered.

In the letter announcing the album, Tweedy wrote that Wilco was "digging in and calling it country" after years of keeping the label at arm's length. His notes at the announcement also tie the songs, loosely, to the history of the United States and to his own mixed feelings about the country he grew up in.

"Falling Apart (Right Now)" was the lead single, released with the announcement on April 28, 2022, and "Tired of Taking It Out on You" followed on May 10. Cruel Country debuted at number 190 on the Billboard 200 and holds a Metacritic score of 83 from 17 reviews. Jon Pareles of The New York Times called it an "understated magnum opus," a line printed on this pressing's sticker. Wilco played the whole album in sequence at its Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA on release weekend. In the band's catalog it sits between Ode to Joy (2019) and Cousin (2023).
