Original 2004 Enhanced CD

This is Nonesuch's first compact disc issue of A Ghost Is Born, catalog number 79809-2, released in the US on June 22, 2004: the twelve-track album on a single enhanced CD. It was Wilco's fifth studio album and their second for Nonesuch, following Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002). The package was designed by Peter Buchanan-Smith with Dan Nadel for PictureBox, Inc., with photography by Michael Schmelling and Peter Buchanan-Smith and drawings by Gladys Nilsson. At the 2005 Grammy Awards the album won Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package, the latter credited to the creators of the artwork.

Recording began in November 2003 under the working title Wilco Happens. Most of the album was cut at Sear Sound in New York City and engineered by Chris Shaw. Tracks 8 to 11 (apart from the drone section) were recorded at SOMA E.M.S. in Chicago with Mikael Jorgensen engineering. Wilco and Jim O'Rourke produced, O'Rourke mixed at Sear Sound, and Steve Rooke mastered the record at Abbey Road in London. Songs were first played live in the room, edited and arranged in Pro Tools, and then performed again with minimal overdubbing.

Jeff Tweedy sings and, for the only time in the band's history, plays lead guitar throughout. John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Leroy Bach and Mikael Jorgensen fill out the band, with O'Rourke on piano, bass, guitars and an ARP 2600. This was Jorgensen's first Wilco album. Frankie Montuoro (hammered dulcimer) and Karen Waltuch (viola) appear on "Hummingbird," and Tim Barnes adds percussion to "Handshake Drugs." "Less Than You Think" runs about fifteen minutes, closing on a long passage of synthesizer drones to which every member contributed a part.

The release moved from June 8 to June 22 after Tweedy entered a treatment program in Chicago in May 2004. In its first week the album reached number 8 on the Billboard 200 with more than 81,000 copies sold, at the time the band's highest US chart position and best sales week. "I'm a Wheel" was issued as a single on July 26, 2004.
