Standard Edition CD in Jewel Case

This is the original American compact disc of Weezer's sixth studio album, released by DGC and Interscope on June 3, 2008 under catalog number B0011135-02. It holds the ten-track standard sequence in a plain jewel case. The deluxe edition and several overseas CDs added bonus tracks; this disc has the album exactly as sequenced, running about 42 minutes.

It was the band's third self-titled record, after the Blue Album of 1994 and the Green Album of 2001, and the nickname comes from Sean Murphy's cover photograph of Brian Bell, Patrick Wilson, Rivers Cuomo and Scott Shriner standing in front of a red backdrop.

Recording ran from April 2007 to February 2008 at Shangri La Studios and the Malibu Performing Arts Center in Malibu and at Threshold Studios in Santa Monica. Rick Rubin and Jacknife Lee each produced part of the album, and the band produced a handful of tracks themselves. Stevie Blacke played and arranged the strings, and the engineers included Andrew Scheps, Tom McFall and David Schiffman.

It remains the only Weezer album with lead vocals from all four members. Bell sings "Thought I Knew," Shriner sings "Cold Dark World," and Wilson sings his own song "Automatic." Cuomo's "Heart Songs" walks through the music he grew up on, from Gordon Lightfoot to Nirvana's Nevermind.

The album reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Cuomo wrote "Pork and Beans" after a meeting in which Geffen pressed for more commercial material. It became the lead single, spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, and its video won the Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video. "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived," "Dreamin'" and "Troublemaker" followed as singles.
