Standard CD in Jewel Case

This is the standard compact disc of Pinkerton, the second studio album by Weezer, issued in a jewel case under catalog number DGCD-25007 on Geffen's DGC imprint. It holds the ten tracks in their original running order, just under 35 minutes in all, a length Rivers Cuomo has described as "short by design."

The CD carries its own set of details. Lines from Puccini's Madama Butterfly are printed on it in the original Italian, and behind the tray sits a map titled Isola della farfalla e penisola di cane, with a ship named USS Pinkerton and the names of Cuomo's influences, Brian Wilson, Howard Stern and Yngwie Malmsteen among them. The cover adapts Night Snow at Kanbara from Hiroshige's 1830s woodblock series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido.

Weezer produced the album themselves to get closer to their live sound, recording at studios including Electric Lady in New York and Sound City in Los Angeles while Cuomo was studying at Harvard. Cuomo, Brian Bell and Matt Sharp sang their vocals together around three microphones rather than overdubbing them one at a time. It was the last Weezer album with Sharp, who left the band in 1998.

The title comes from BF Pinkerton, the American naval officer in Madama Butterfly, whom Cuomo likened to a touring rock star. Released in 1996, the album debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles "El Scorcho" and "The Good Life." Its first reviews were mixed; later reassessment put it on several lists of the best albums of the 1990s, and it was certified platinum in the US in 2016.
