Numbered 180g Translucent Blue Vinyl LP

Yellow Sun Blues: Volume One is a limited, numbered pressing on 180-gram translucent blue vinyl, catalog number SUNX7063, issued in December 2015 on Sun with Icehouse Records. The hype sticker notes it was specially remastered for this LP and made in Memphis, and the jacket comes with a six-page color booklet. Johnny Phillips is credited as compilation producer.

The twelve tracks come from the early years of Sam Phillips' operation at 706 Union Avenue, where he opened the Memphis Recording Service in January 1950 and launched Sun Records in 1952. In those years Phillips worked mainly with Black blues and rhythm and blues musicians, and Ike Turner, then a talent scout and in-house producer, brought in Little Milton, Roscoe Gordon and Billy "The Kid" Emerson, all heard here.

Little Junior Parker wrote and recorded "Mystery Train" at the studio in 1953, two years before Elvis Presley cut his version for Sun. "Just Walking In The Rain" is by The Prisonaires, a vocal group formed inside the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville, whose 1953 Sun single was later covered by Johnnie Ray. Rufus Thomas, James Cotton, Joe Hill Louis and Doctor Ross round out the set.
