40th Anniversary Transparent Blue 12-inch

Island and UMe made this 12-inch for Record Store Day to mark forty years of "11 O'Clock Tick Tock." It plays at 45 RPM on 180-gram transparent blue vinyl, in a full-color gatefold with a photo gallery inside. Side A has the full-length version of the single and its original 7-inch B-side, "Touch." Side B has two live recordings from U2's show at the Marquee in London in September 1980, both previously unreleased. Announced for April 2020, it came out on August 29, 2020, one of that year's Record Store Day Drops dates. After the reissue the song reached No. 69 on the Irish Singles Chart.

The song was U2's first single for Island, released in May 1980 after the band signed with the label that March. Island's A&R man Nick Stewart pointed them to Martin Hannett, then producing Joy Division, and Hannett recorded it with them at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin that April. The band went with Steve Lillywhite for their first album, Boy, instead. Bono based the lyric on watching the crowd at a Cramps show in London from the balcony.

It did not chart at first. A live version on Under a Blood Red Sky took it to No. 30 on the US rock tracks chart in January 1984, and the video above is the band playing it on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1981.
