Remastered 180-Gram Vinyl LP

Island issued this 180-gram LP of When The Eagle Flies on May 14, 2021, one of the albums pulled individually from the 2019 box Traffic: The Studio Albums 1967-74. The label notes that it was remastered from the original tapes, with the artwork overseen for the reissue. It comes with an inner sleeve carrying the lyrics and artwork, plus a download card, and was pressed at GZ Media. Catalog number 775 125-9.

The album was Traffic's seventh, released in 1974 with Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood joined by Rosko Gee on bass. Percussionist Rebop Kwaku Baah was let go before it was finished but still plays on two tracks. Winwood took on a wider range of keyboards than on earlier Traffic records, adding Moog and Mellotron, and Chris Blackwell produced with the band. Sessions ran at Basing Street Studios, Netherturkdonic Studios and on the Island Mobile, and Vivian Stanshall is credited as a co-writer alongside Winwood and Capaldi.

It was the band's fourth studio album in a row to reach the American top ten and go gold, though in the UK it charted for a single week at No. 31. A Chris Wood piece, "Moonchild Vulcan," was recorded for it and dropped in favor of "Memories of a Rock n' Rolla." Traffic split up partway through the tour that followed and did not make another album until Winwood and Capaldi reunited for Far from Home twenty years later. The eleven-minute "Dream Gerrard" takes up most of the first side.
