Indie Exclusive Opaque Jade Blue Vinyl LP in Gatefold Jacket

This is the independent-store edition of Sugar: a single LP pressed on opaque jade blue vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket with a double-sided insert. The hype sticker carries an NPR line calling Merritt "a songwriter of rare grace" and identifies the pressing as an indie exclusive. One Riot Records released the album on June 26, 2026, under catalog number ORR1019.

Sugar is Merritt's first album since Stitch of the World in 2017. In the years between she raised her daughter, served as Practitioner-in-Residence at Duke University and worked on musicians' rights with the Artist Rights Alliance, and the twelve songs were written across roughly eight of those years. She has described the record as being "about the surprising sweetness of being unequipped for showing up every day but trying anyway."

Lawrence Rothman produced and mixed it at Gold Pacific Studios in Nashville, where the band tracked live. Rothman has said many of the takes were first takes, with Merritt "on the floor cutting with the band." The players include guitarist Audley Freed, Robert Ellis on electric and acoustic guitar, drummers Eric Slick of Dr. Dog and McKenzie Smith of Midlake, and Art Edmaiston on saxophone, with Merritt on acoustic guitar and piano. Pete Lyman mastered the album at Infrasonic Sound. "Finest Feelings," the opening track and the video above, was the lead single. "Everyday Singing" followed as a single, and "Look What Love Just Did" was the focus track on release day.

The North Carolina songwriter first broke through with Tambourine in 2004, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album.
