Limited Edition of 1000 Individually Numbered Copies on Turquoise 180 Gram Vinyl

Music On Vinyl's turquoise pressing of Thomas Dolby's debut is a run of 1000 individually numbered copies on 180-gram vinyl, packed in a slip sleeve with an insert. It is the Dutch label's second limited color run of the album, following a silver edition of 1000 that arrived in November 2024.

This LP restores the original 1982 UK running order: nine tracks, opening with "Flying North" and closing with "Cloudburst at Shingle Street." "The Wreck of the Fairchild" is here at the head of side B, leading into "Airwaves" and the synthesizer version of "Radio Silence," and the later hit "She Blinded Me with Science" is not. That song only joined the album on the 1983 re-sequencings, which also dropped "Fairchild."

Dolby paid for the record with his earnings from session work on Foreigner's 4, where his synthesizer intro opens "Waiting for a Girl Like You." He co-produced it with Tim Friese-Greene, and it came out through his own Venice in Peril label, with EMI manufacturing and distributing it. Four of its songs were released as singles: "Europa and the Pirate Twins," his first EMI release, then "Airwaves," "Radio Silence" and "Windpower." The central character of "Radio Silence" is a personification of the 1960s pirate station Radio Caroline. Looking back in 2009, Dolby described the songs as relationships set against a backdrop of impending war.

Rolling Stone's Don Shewey gave the album four stars in October 1982, calling it "one of the most impressive debuts" of the year. In its US configuration, with "She Blinded Me with Science" added, it reached No. 13 on the Billboard albums chart in June 1983 and No. 8 in Canada.
