Rhino High Fidelity 180-Gram Black Vinyl, Brick & Mortar Edition

This edition of Loaded joins the Rhino High Fidelity series as a brick-and-mortar retail release, part of Rhino's Rocktober 2026 program and separate from the series' numbered Rhino.com issue. Rhino states that Kevin Gray cuts the lacquers for every Rhino High Fidelity release and that Optimal presses the 180-gram records.

The sessions took place at Atlantic's studios in New York, with production credited to Geoff Haslam, Shel Kagan and the band, and Adrian Barber engineering. With Maureen Tucker away, the drum parts fell mainly to Doug Yule, Barber on "Who Loves The Sun," Tommy Castagnaro on "Cool It Down" and "Head Held High," and Billy Yule on "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" and "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'." Lou Reed, gone before the album came out, maintained that it was remixed and resequenced without his consent and that the shortened "Sweet Jane" and "New Age" were edited without him; Doug Yule's account was that Reed made the edits himself.

Neither the album nor its singles charted on release: "Who Loves The Sun" followed in April 1971 and "Sweet Jane" in July 1973. Stanislaw Zagorski's cover draws the Times Square-42nd Street subway entrance, with "downtown" misspelled as "dowtown" on the sign. Robert Christgau, in The Village Voice, described the music as genuine rock and roll that was also "really intellectual and ironic."
