RSD Essentials #096 Cherry Bomb Metallic Red Vinyl LP, 30th Anniversary

Number 096 in the RSD Essentials series is the 30th anniversary edition of Destruction by Definition on Cherry Bomb metallic red vinyl, issued on July 10, 2026. Record Store Day's notes say the album was remastered for the first time for this release, and the single LP comes in a gatefold jacket with a two-sided 11-inch insert. Nick Townsend cut the lacquers at Infrasonic Sound.

Hollywood Records first put the album out on May 21, 1996. It was the Detroit band's first full-length and their major label debut, a mix of hardcore punk and ska that got them filed as ska punk, and singer Jason Navarro chose the title as a reply to exactly that: put a label on something and you destroy it.

Julian Raymond, Phil Kaffel and the band produced it. Kaffel recorded the sessions at A&M Studios in Hollywood in November and December 1995, and Jerry Finn mixed it at Conway Studios the following January. Navarro sings, Dan Lukacinsky plays guitar, Royce Nunley bass and Derek Grant drums, with Grant also on Hammond organ, clavinet and piano, Vinnie Nobile on trombone and Larry Klimas on tenor saxophone.

"No Face" reached No. 31 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, and videos were made for it and for "S.O.S." "New Girl" turned up a few years later on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater soundtrack, and "Break the Glass" was used in the film An American Werewolf in Paris.
