United States Edition CD in Jewel Case

The American edition of The Strokes' debut, catalog number 07863 68101-2, one disc in a jewel case running 35 minutes and 48 seconds. RCA moved the United States CD from September 25 to October 9, 2001, and the band replaced "New York City Cops" with "When It Started," written and recorded for the purpose. They told MTV at the time that the decision followed the response of the city's police department after the September 11 attacks. The American vinyl, which had shipped on September 11 itself, kept the original running order.

The sleeve is particular to this edition as well. American copies carry a photograph of subatomic particle tracks in a bubble chamber, an image that had already appeared on Bruce Becvar's 1988 album The Nature of Things and later turned up on the cover of a Freeman Dyson essay collection. RCA product manager Dave Gottlieb described the switch as "straight up a band decision." On the back is Jacques Carlu's 1924 painting View of the Citadel on the Capitol.

The band signed to RCA in March 2001, after the Rough Trade EP The Modern Age had set off a bidding war. Gordon Raphael produced the album and Greg Calbi mastered it. Julian Casablancas sings, Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. play guitar, Nikolai Fraiture plays bass and Fabrizio Moretti drums.

The RIAA certified the album gold in February 2002, for 500,000 copies shipped in the United States. By October 2003 it had spent 58 weeks on the Billboard 200 and sold about 900,000 copies in America. "Last Nite," the video above, arrived as a single on October 23, 2001, two weeks after this disc.
