Remastered Vinyl LP, Printed Lyric Inner Sleeve

This is the Rhino LP of Meat Is Murder from the Smiths catalog reissues, carrying the 2011 remaster and pressed in Europe at Optimal Media. It keeps the original artwork, whose cover image is taken from Emile de Antonio's 1969 film In the Year of the Pig, and a printed inner sleeve with the lyrics and credits.

Rough Trade first released the album on February 11, 1985. It was the Smiths' second studio album and the only one to reach No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, and it spent eleven weeks on the European Top 100. In the US it peaked at No. 110 on the Billboard 200.

The band produced it themselves with engineer Stephen Street, who had first worked with them on "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now," and the final recordings were finished at Ridge Farm in Surrey in December 1984. Johnny Marr built many of the demos in his Earl's Court flat, and Morrissey handed over his own BBC sound effects records to be sampled, a habit that carried on through later Smiths records.

The lyrics turn more political than on the debut: the title track argues for vegetarianism and "Barbarism Begins at Home" takes on corporal punishment. "Barbarism Begins at Home," "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and "The Headmaster Ritual" were all released as singles in 1985. Morrissey sings, Marr plays guitars and piano, Andy Rourke plays bass and Mike Joyce drums; the audio above is "The Headmaster Ritual."
