Indie Exclusive Gold Swirl 2LP, 20 Year Anniversary Edition

Positive Jams, the band's own label, released the 20 Year Anniversary Edition through Thirty Tigers on December 5, 2025, as a double LP; this gold swirl pressing was made for independent record stores. The eleven original songs are newly remastered and joined by nine bonus tracks, all on vinyl for the first time: the B-sides "212-Margarita" and "The Most Important Thing," three demos, and the four songs of The Virgin Digital Sessions, an internet-only EP from 2005. New artwork uses archival photographs, with newly written liner notes.

Separation Sunday first came out on Frenchkiss Records on May 3, 2005, the Hold Steady's second album. Dean Baltulonis and Dave Gardner produced it side by side. Founding drummer Judd Counsell plays on the first four songs and the closer, "How a Resurrection Really Feels," and his replacement Bobby Drake on the rest; it was also Franz Nicolay's first album as a full member on keyboards. Craig Finn's lyrics follow Holly, Charlemagne and Gideon from city to city and party to party, characters who turn up again in later Hold Steady songs.

The cover photograph was taken at the corner of Maspeth Avenue and Conselyea Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The album placed eighth in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll for 2005, and Paste ranked it No. 241 on its list of the greatest albums of the 21st century in 2025. Finn has said the album "changed everything for The Hold Steady."
