2LP Black Vinyl

Warner's double-LP edition of The Soft Bulletin spreads thirteen tracks across four sides of black vinyl, each disc in a printed inner sleeve. The vinyl sequence carries both "The Spiderbite Song" and "Slow Motion", the two songs that divided the album's first CD issues: the US disc had the former, the UK disc the latter. Until The Soft Bulletin 5.1 arrived in 2006, American listeners could find "Slow Motion" only on vinyl.

This is the Flaming Lips' ninth studio album, issued by Warner Bros. in the UK on May 17, 1999 and in the US on June 22. Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins and Steven Drozd recorded it at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York, between April 1997 and February 1999, producing with Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker. The orchestral scale came in part from detuned, layered MIDI keyboards rather than a live orchestra.

The cover adapts Lawrence Schiller's photograph The Acid Test: Neal Cassady, which Schiller says shows Cassady dancing with his own shadow at a Merry Pranksters Acid Test; it first ran in a 1966 Life magazine feature on LSD. "Race for the Prize" and "Waitin' for a Superman" were the singles, released in June and November 1999.

Pitchfork ranked the album third on its list of the top 100 albums of the 1990s and has scored it 10.0. Robert Dimery included it, with its follow-up Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die in 2006, the same year the BPI certified it Gold in the UK.
