Mobile Fidelity Numbered 180g 45 RPM 2LP In Stoughton Gatefold Jacket

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's numbered-edition Original Master Recording of Takin' It to the Streets spreads the nine songs across two 180-gram LPs cut at 45 RPM, the first time the album has been issued at that speed. The source is the original 1/4-inch, 15 IPS Dolby A analog master, run to DSD 256 and then through an analog console to the lathe by MoFi engineer Krieg Wunderlich. The discs were pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California and sit in a Stoughton gatefold jacket. Each copy is individually numbered; the catalog number is MFSL2-600. MoFi counts it as its fifth Doobie Brothers 45 RPM reissue.

Warner Bros. Records released the album on March 19, 1976. Ted Templeman produced it at Warner Bros. Studios in North Hollywood, with Donn Landee engineering and the mix done at Sunset Sound. MoFi's notes recount how the record came together: Tom Johnston stepped back during preparation to deal with health problems, and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter suggested his former Steely Dan colleague Michael McDonald, who had already sat in with the band on tour. On the first day of sessions, before second drummer Keith Knudsen arrived, the group cut a live run-through of "Wheels of Fortune" with former roadie Bobby LaKind on congas and Little Feat's Richie Hayward on drums, and the instrumental parts of that take stayed on the record. Johnston returned to share the lead vocal with Patrick Simmons.

McDonald wrote or co-wrote four of the songs. The Memphis Horns play on the album, Novi Novog adds viola to "Losin' End," Maria Muldaur makes a vocal cameo on "Rio," and Tiran Porter wrote "For Someone Special." Three singles came from it: the title track, "Wheels of Fortune" and "It Keeps You Runnin'." The album peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, the band's fourth consecutive Top 10 album by MoFi's count, and reached No. 7 in Australia and New Zealand.
