Limited Translucent Violet, Blue & Orange Triple Vinyl LP With Die-Cut O-Card Slipcase
This three-LP set gathers everything The Comet Is Coming recorded for The Leaf Label between 2013 and 2017: the debut album Channel The Spirits, the Prophecy and Death To The Planet EPs, the band's earliest session recordings, and four previously unreleased tracks. The retail vinyl edition is limited to 1,500 copies worldwide, pressed on translucent violet, blue and orange discs. Each record sits in a printed inner sleeve and a die-cut outer sleeve, both printed on their outer and inner surfaces, and the set is housed in a die-cut O-card slipcase with a 60 x 60 cm double-sided fold-out poster. Catalog number BAY104XVX.
Seven tracks appear on vinyl here for the first time. Side D collects The Ancient Tapes, the earliest known Comet recordings, made in 2013 at the Total Refreshment Centre in east London, where the trio served as the unofficial house band; "Late Night Party Jam 2" was unearthed from that first session and is previously unreleased. Side F closes with a session version of "Neon Baby" recorded for John Kennedy's X-Posure show on Xfm, and live recordings of "Final Eclipse" and "Space Carnival," all three previously unreleased.
The Comet Is Coming were King Shabaka (Shabaka Hutchings) on saxophone, Danalogue (Dan Leavers) on keys and synthesizers, and Betamax (Max Hallett) on drums. Leavers and Hallett were playing as the duo Soccer96 when Hutchings joined them onstage; the three booked three days at Total Refreshment Centre and recorded to quarter-inch tape with no material written in advance. Hallett has said the sessions were meant as a demo, and that the band had made its first album before deciding it was a band. Danalogue and Betamax are credited as producers of Channel The Spirits.
The Leaf Label issued the Prophecy EP on limited 12-inch vinyl in November 2015, and Channel The Spirits followed in 2016 with "Space Carnival" as its first single. Joshua Idehen contributes spoken word to "Lightyears" and "Final Days Of The Apocalypse." The album was shortlisted for the 2016 Mercury Prize and placed on year-end lists from Mojo, Uncut, The Quietus and The Line of Best Fit. Death To The Planet arrived as a Record Store Day EP in April 2017, before the band signed to Impulse! for Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery (2019) and Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam (2022).
