Rhino Reserve 180-Gram Black Vinyl LP, Cut From Analog Tape

This is the Rhino Reserve edition of Submarine Bells, catalog number RES1 26130. Rhino's sleeve sticker states that the lacquers were cut from the original analog master by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and that the record was pressed in California at Fidelity Record Pressing on 180-gram vinyl. The label's packshot shows a single black disc in a printed lyric inner sleeve.

Rhino built the Reserve series around analog sources where they exist and pressing at Fidelity in Oxnard, with the weight on sound rather than on a new color variant. This title was issued as part of Rhino's Rocktober 2026 program, a run of 54 limited-edition vinyl releases sold through brick-and-mortar record stores across October.

Submarine Bells is the second studio album by the Chills, the Dunedin band led by Martin Phillipps, who wrote every song on it. It was recorded between August and October 1989 at Jacobs studio in Surrey with producer Gary Smith, and released in 1990 as the band's first album for Slash, the Warner Bros. subsidiary that issued it in the United States. At home it went to No. 1 on the New Zealand albums chart, was certified gold, and won Best Album at the 1990 New Zealand Music Awards. "Heavenly Pop Hit" reached No. 2 on the New Zealand singles chart and No. 17 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks, and took Single of the Year at the same awards. Trouser Press singled out that song and the title track while praising the album for its cohesion.
