180 Gram Violet Vinyl LP With Original Gatefold Cover

This is Friday Music's 2026 anniversary reissue of Byrds, the 1973 reunion album, pressed for a limited time on 180-gram violet vinyl and issued on its Friday Music Two imprint. Joe Reagoso mastered it at Friday Music Studios from the original Asylum recordings, and it comes in the original gatefold cover with photography by Henry Diltz.

Byrds was the twelfth and final studio album by the Byrds, and it reunited all five original members, Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke, who had last worked together as the Byrds in 1966. David Geffen signed the reunion to his Asylum label, and Crosby produced the sessions, which began on October 16, 1972, at Wally Heider's studio in Los Angeles. Asylum released the album in March 1973.

The songs came from across the group: Clark's "Full Circle" and "Changing Heart," Crosby's "Laughing" and "Long Live the King," McGuinn's "Born to Rock 'n' Roll" and "Things Will Be Better," written by Hillman with Dallas Taylor, along with two Neil Young songs, "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "(See the Sky) About to Rain," and Joni Mitchell's "For Free." Diltz's photographs show the band at the Troubadour, the Los Angeles club where McGuinn, Clark and Crosby first came together in 1964.

The album reached No. 20 on the Billboard chart, the band's highest-charting album of new material in the US since Turn! Turn! Turn! in 1965, and No. 31 in the UK. It drew generally poor reviews; Jon Landau, in Rolling Stone, called it "one of the dullest albums of the year," and the five went back to their own careers. Hillman later said, "They gave us one-and-a-half months to do that album."
