Light Blue 7-Inch Vinyl Single

This is the light blue 7-inch of the Beatles' 2023 double A-side single, pairing "Now and Then" with a new stereo mix of "Love Me Do." The stereo vinyl run was issued as black 7-inch and 12-inch editions alongside two colored 7-inch pressings, light blue and clear. The disc plays at 45 RPM, carries the green Apple label and comes in a picture sleeve with a two-sided printed insert. Its hand-etched runouts are marked "Abbey Road ½ Speed," and the vinyl mastering was completed at Abbey Road Studios.

The label's notes call "Now and Then" the last Beatles song. John Lennon recorded it as a piano demo around 1977 at his home in the Dakota in New York. The three surviving Beatles started work on it in 1995 during the Anthology project and set it aside after a few days, in part because the demo's piano and mains hum buried the vocal. It was finished once Peter Jackson's WingNut Films separated Lennon's voice from the piano, using the machine-assisted audio restoration built for the 2021 documentary The Beatles: Get Back.

Paul McCartney added bass, slide guitar, electric harpsichord, piano and backing vocals; Ringo Starr recorded drums and backing vocals in Los Angeles; and George Harrison's acoustic and electric guitar parts from the 1995 sessions were carried into the finished track. McCartney, Giles Martin and Ben Foster wrote a string arrangement, recorded at Capitol Studios in April 2022. McCartney and Martin produced, Jeff Lynne is credited with additional production, and Spike Stent mixed it. The single reached number one in the UK, is the only Beatles UK number one not credited to Lennon-McCartney, and won Best Rock Performance at the 67th Grammy Awards.

On the AA side, "Love Me Do" was the band's first UK single, in 1962. For this release it was de-mixed with machine-assisted learning and remixed in true stereo for the first time. Both songs also appear on the expanded 2023 editions of the 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 compilations.

Ed Ruscha, who also made the cover of McCartney III, designed the front of the sleeve. The back shows a handmade folk art clock by Chris Giffin that George Harrison bought in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1997; its face carries the words "Now" and "Then." Peter Jackson directed the music video.
