Vinyl LP

The Anxiety on a single vinyl LP, issued in the US by MSFTSMusic and Roc Nation on July 24, 2020 under catalog number ROC00514-01, four months after the album first appeared digitally. The ten songs are split five to a side, and the jacket carries an inner sleeve printed with the lyrics and credits.

Engineer Zach Brown recorded the album at Electric Lady Studios in New York and mixed it there and at Conway and Chalice Recording Studios in Los Angeles. Joe LaPorta mastered it at Sterling Sound.

The Anxiety is Willow Smith and Tyler Cole, longtime partners and collaborators; Cole had co-produced her 2019 self-titled album. The two wrote and produced every track here. Their debut single "Hey You!" arrived on February 28, 2020. Two days before the album came out that March, they staged a performance piece at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, spending 24 hours locked in a glass box without speaking to each other, moving through eight stages of anxiety in three-hour stretches.

The songs deal with anxiety, rage, panic attacks and government corruption, and the duo framed the project around mental health awareness. AllMusic places the record across punk, indie rock and dream pop, with uptempo songs early and slower, R&B-leaning ballads toward the end.

The album did not chart when it was released. That changed in late 2021, when "Meet Me at Our Spot" became a sleeper hit on TikTok and took the album to No. 103 on the Billboard 200, No. 11 on Top Alternative Albums and No. 7 on Heatseekers Albums. The song itself has since been certified double platinum in the US. The Anxiety was Cole's first charting album, and Smith's first to chart in Canada.
