Black Vinyl 2LP In Gatefold Sleeve

This double LP is the vinyl edition of Joe Strummer 003: The 101'ers Years, the third volume in Dark Horse Records' Joe Strummer archive series after Joe Strummer 001 and Joe Strummer 002: The Mescaleros Years. The first record holds the band's complete studio recordings and the second a selection of basement tapes and demos, pressed on two black LPs in a gatefold sleeve. Paul Hicks remastered the collection and restored the demos from the original cassette tapes, and four studio tracks appear in new 2026 mixes: "Keys To Your Heart," "Rabies (From the Dogs of Love)," "5 Star R'n'R" and "Surf City." David Zonshine produced the release.

The 101'ers formed in London in May 1974 and took their name from 101 Walterton Road in Maida Vale, the squat where they lived. Joe Strummer, then known as Woody Mellor, played guitar and sang in a lineup that changed often and included Richard Dudanski on drums. The band played its first gig on September 7, 1974, at the Telegraph in Brixton, and later held a residency at the Elgin. Strummer wrote that the group ran a club every Wednesday in an upstairs pub room, with a 10p entry fee.

Chiswick Records issued "Keys To Your Heart" as the band's debut single in 1976. On April 3 of that year the Sex Pistols opened for The 101'ers at the Nashville Room, and Strummer, drawn to the new punk movement, soon left to join The Clash, which played its first show on July 4, 1976. Dudanski went on to drum for The Raincoats and Public Image Ltd. Side D includes "Full Moon," an acoustic demo Strummer recorded alone at the band's West London squat.
