25th Anniversary 180 Gram 2LP, Etched Side D

A&M issued this double LP in 2016 for the album's 25th anniversary, using the new stereo mix Brendan O'Brien made for the reissue. The ten songs run across three sides of 180-gram vinyl, and side D carries an etched image instead of music. The gatefold jacket adds expanded art and photographs, and a 12-inch insert prints the lyrics and credits. Early copies came with a lenticular cover; later pressings under this barcode use a standard printed jacket.

The band formed in Seattle after Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood died in March 1990. Chris Cornell, Wood's former roommate, wrote "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and "Reach Down" in response and took them to Wood's bandmates Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and guitarist Mike McCready joined, and Eddie Vedder, newly arrived in town, sang backing vocals and traded lead lines with Cornell on "Hunger Strike." They recorded the album in 15 days in November and December 1990 at London Bridge Studio with producer Rick Parashar, who also played the piano and organ parts.

A&M released it on April 16, 1991, and it sold about 70,000 copies at first. Once Pearl Jam's Ten and Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger had broken through, the label pushed it again in 1992 with "Hunger Strike" as a single and video. The song reached No. 4 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart, and the album went on to be certified platinum by the RIAA.
