Remastered 180 Gram Vinyl LP With Bonus 7-Inch, Import

Sony Music reissued Songs From Northern Britain in the UK in 2018, one of five Teenage Fanclub albums from the Creation Records years brought back on vinyl together. It was remastered from the original tapes at Abbey Road Studios under the band's guidance, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and housed in a reproduction of the original 1997 vinyl artwork. Initial pressings add a 7-inch of two B-sides the band picked, both on vinyl for the first time: "Middle of the Road," from the "I Don't Want Control of You" single, and "Broken," from "Ain't That Enough." The printed inner sleeve has credits and photographs.

Creation first released the album, the band's sixth, on July 29, 1997. Most of it was recorded with producer David Bianco at Ridge Farm in Surrey between May and July 1996, with strings and brass added at Abbey Road that June. The band fell out with Bianco during the sessions and finished the record with George Shilling at AIR Studios in London. Photographer Donald Milne shot the artwork over a three-day drive around the Scottish Highlands in the spring of 1997, a trip that took in the Torness power station and a funfair being taken down at Aviemore.

The writing is split evenly. Gerard Love wrote "Ain't That Enough," "Take the Long Way Round," "Mount Everest" and "Speed of Light." Norman Blake's songs are "Start Again," "I Don't Want Control of You" and "Winter," plus "Planets," written with drummer Francis Macdonald and built around a Minimoog. Raymond McGinley wrote the other four, closing side two with "Your Love Is the Place Where I Come From."

The album reached No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart, the highest placing of the band's career, and "Ain't That Enough" became their best-charting single at No. 17. Nick Hornby lists it among his favorite albums in 31 Songs and named the book's introduction after "Your Love Is the Place Where I Come From."
