Single LP Reissue, Polydor and UMe

This is the US vinyl reissue of Laughing Stock, issued in January 2016 by Polydor and Universal Music Enterprises under catalog number B0024137-01. The six songs fill one LP, three to a side, from "Myrrhman" through "Runeii."

Laughing Stock was Talk Talk's fifth and last studio album, released on September 16, 1991. Bassist Paul Webb had left after Spirit of Eden, so the band was down to singer Mark Hollis and drummer Lee Harris. They had left EMI on bad terms and signed to Polydor, which put the record out on its newly revived, jazz-based Verve imprint.

Tim Friese-Greene produced it and Phill Brown engineered, at Wessex Sound Studios in London from September 1990 to April 1991. As on Spirit of Eden, a large ensemble improvised for hours and the takes were edited into the finished pieces. Brown later said the album was "recorded by chance, accident, and hours of trying every possible overdub idea." The band split up after its release.

"After the Flood," "New Grass" and "Ascension Day" were issued as singles that autumn. The album has since come to be cited as an early landmark of post-rock: Pitchfork gave it a perfect 10 and ranked it eleventh among the best albums of the 1990s, and Stylus Magazine named it the greatest post-rock album in 2007. No official video from the band or label exists for these songs, so none is embedded.
