180 Gram Clear Vinyl LP

Demon Records issued this pressing in February 2020 as part of its T. Rex reissue run, with Tanx on 180-gram clear vinyl for the first time. The album carries the remaster made by Tony Visconti, who produced the original sessions, with mastering engineer Ted Jensen. Demon catalogs it as DEMREC637.

Tanx came out on March 16, 1973, the fourth T. Rex album under that name. It reached No. 4 in the UK, No. 3 in Germany and No. 5 in Norway, and peaked at No. 102 on the Billboard 200. None of the singles from that stretch made the record. "20th Century Boy" sat at the end of a master compiled on New Year's Eve 1972 and was taken off on January 8, which left the album without a single.

Most of it was recorded at the Château d'Hérouville in France, in a four-day block in early August 1972 and a second session that October, with overdubs at AIR in London. "Electric Slim and the Factory Hen" and "Shock Rock" were cut in Tokyo that December, without Visconti. Marc Bolan sang and played guitar, with Mickey Finn on percussion, Steve Currie on bass and Bill Legend on drums. Visconti added mellotron and string arrangements, and Howie Casey played saxophone.

Bolan pushed toward soul and gospel here. Madeline Bell, Lesley Duncan, Vicki Brown, Barry St. John and Sue and Sunny double him on the choruses of "Left Hand Luke and the Beggar Boys," uncredited on the sleeve. John Kosh designed the package around the tank pun in the title, with Peter Howe's front cover photograph of Bolan astride a toy tank.
