Black Vinyl LP

This is the Asthmatic Kitty Records vinyl edition of Seven Swans, catalog number AKR130: one black LP, twelve songs, six to a side. The label reissued the record on its own imprint; the original had come out on Sounds Familyre.

Daniel Smith of the Danielson Family produced it, recording at his home and at the New Jerusalem Rec Room in Clarksboro, New Jersey, and other members of the Danielson Family play on it. The arrangements are spare: banjo, strummed acoustic guitar, organ and hushed vocals. Many of the lyrics retell Bible stories, among them God's test of Abraham on "Abraham" and Christ's Transfiguration on the closing track.

Seven Swans was released on March 16, 2004, as Stevens' fourth studio album, between Michigan and Illinois. "The Dress Looks Nice on You," the recording above, was issued as its single on March 8, 2004. The Guardian called it "a record of remarkable delicacy."
