Rhino Reserve 180 Gram Black Vinyl LP

This is the Rhino Reserve edition of A Sailor's Guide To Earth, issued on January 2, 2026 as one of the titles in Rhino's Start Your Ear Off Right 2026 program. Rhino Reserve is the label's audiophile vinyl series. For this pressing, Matthew Lutthans cut the lacquers at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing in California. It is a single LP in a gatefold jacket, catalog number RES1 728491, and the runouts carry that number alongside The Mastering Lab's TML-M mark.

The sticker on the front of the jacket notes that this was Simpson's third studio album and his first for Atlantic Records, and that it won Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards along with a nomination for Album of the Year.

Simpson produced the album and wrote it from beginning to end as a letter to his first child, who arrived in the summer of 2014. It holds eight originals and a cover of Nirvana's "In Bloom." Most of it was recorded at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville with engineer David Ferguson, whose credits include Johnny Cash and John Prine, and assistant engineer Sean Sullivan, with further sessions at Atlantic Studios in New York and Ca Va in Glasgow. The Dap-Kings appear as special guests, Dan Dugmore plays steel guitar, and Dougie Wilkinson's bagpipes are heard on the closing track, "Call to Arms." Gavin Lurssen mastered the original release.

Atlantic first released the album on April 15, 2016. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on Top Country Albums, selling 52,000 copies in its first week. "Brace for Impact (Live a Little)," the song in the video above, was the lead single, released on March 3, 2016, the day the album was announced. "Oh Sarah" first appeared in 2011 on To the Wind and On to Heaven, the only full-length album by Simpson's earlier band Sunday Valley. Kilian Eng created the cover and back cover art.
