Black Vinyl LP

This is the standard black vinyl LP of Black & Loud, catalog B0033643-01, issued in 2022 by Republic Records with UMe, Universal's catalog division. Scott Martin mastered the album and Alex Abrash cut the lacquers. A separate colored-vinyl edition was sold only through the Urban Legends web store.

Stro Elliot, the multi-instrumentalist and producer who plays with The Roots, chose ten James Brown records and built a new track around each one. The retitled songs point back to their sources: "Coal Sweat" comes from "Cold Sweat," "SortaBad" from "Super Bad," "The Big Purple Donut" from "The Payback," and "Black And Loud" from "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud."

The approach changes from track to track. "She Made Me Popcorn" leans on hip-hop-style sampling of Brown's vocals, "Machine No Make Sex" sets "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine" to Afrobeat rhythms and horns, and "Coal Sweat" turns the 1967 original toward psychedelic electronics. "Machine No Make Sex" was the first track shared from the project, in December 2021.

Elliot grew up playing and studying jazz, funk and soul. Of Brown, he said: "There are genres and subgenres that wouldn't exist today without him. This is a dissection and celebration of that."

Shipping Speeds & Delivery Estimates

Delivery timelines are estimates, not guarantees.

Estimated delivery windows are quoted at checkout based on the shipping speed you select and your delivery address. Transit time begins after your order has been processed.

Typical delivery within the United States ranges from 3–7 business days after shipment, depending on location and selected service. Delivery times for Canada vary by destination and carrier, and may be affected by customs processing.

While most deliveries arrive within the quoted window, occasional delays may occur due to weather, carrier volume, or other factors outside our control.

Shipping Rates

Shipping costs are calculated and displayed at checkout based on destination, package weight, and selected delivery speed.

Signature Requirements

Orders totaling over $250 may require a signature upon delivery to help ensure safe receipt. This is applied based on order value and carrier guidelines.

Once your order ships, you’ll receive tracking information via email. We recommend monitoring tracking updates and ensuring delivery to a secure location.

Evergreen Vinyl is not responsible for packages that are lost or stolen after being marked as delivered by the carrier. Customers are responsible for selecting a shipping address where deliveries can be received safely.

• Please retain all original packaging, including the outer box and packing materials

• Original shipping costs are non-refundable unless the error was ours

• Refund timing may vary depending on your payment provider

Chargebacks & Payment Disputes

We strongly encourage customers to contact us directly with any concerns before filing a credit card dispute or chargeback.

Once a dispute or chargeback has been initiated, we are unable to proceed with refunds, replacements, or reshipments until the case is fully resolved. Resolution timelines are controlled by the payment processor and can take up to 120 days.

Preorders may be cancelled for a full refund at any time before the order ships.

Once a preorder has shipped, it is treated as a completed order and is subject to the return, refund, and exchange policies outlined above.
