The Original Source Series 180g 3LP Limited Numbered Box Set

This is Deutsche Grammophon's Original Source edition of Steve Reich's 1974 recording, issued for the composer's 90th birthday on October 3, 2026. Three 180g LPs sit in a numbered, limited-edition lift-off box carrying the original cover art. DG states that the recordings were remastered and edited from the original four-track tapes for the first time, at Emil Berliner Studios, where the Original Source series is mastered and cut in an all-analog (AAA) chain. Rainer Maillard mastered the set and Sidney Meyer cut the lacquers. Catalog number 486 8223.

The box holds a 32-page booklet with photographs from the sessions, facsimiles of the original recording logs and tape sleeves, Reich's original liner notes and a new essay by David Butchart on the history of the recording, along with a certificate carrying a text by Maillard on the original tape sources and the analog mastering process.

Steve Reich and Musicians recorded all three works at Polydor Studios in Hamburg in January 1974, with Rudolf Werner and Klaus Hiemann producing. The performance of Drumming fills the first two LPs, one part to a side; Six Pianos and Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices And Organ share the third. DG first issued the recording as a three-LP box, catalog number 2740 106.

Reich composed Drumming in 1970 and 1971, after a short visit to Ghana where he observed local ensembles, particularly the Anlo Ewe master drummer Gideon Alorwoyie. The piece is built on a single repeated rhythmic pattern in 12/8 and moves through four parts: tuned bongos, then marimbas with female voices, then glockenspiels with whistling and piccolo, and finally the full ensemble. Players on this recording include Russ Hartenberger, Bob Becker, James Preiss, Glen Velez, Steve Chambers, Tim Ferchen, Cornelius Cardew and Reich himself, with Joan La Barbara and Jay Clayton among the voices.
