This is the standard black vinyl edition of Thrush Metal, a 12-inch EP cut to play at 45 RPM and issued by Secretly Canadian under catalog number SC371, with a digital download card. The label's first pressing was a limited white vinyl run under a separate barcode. Both carry the bonus track "Talking," which was not on the original release.
Thrush Metal is the debut EP by the Australian songwriter Stella Donnelly, who was raised between Wales and Western Australia. She recorded its five original songs as demos, with just her guitar, and self-released them in April 2017. After "Mechanical Bull" was added to an influential streaming playlist, labels came calling, and Secretly Canadian signed her and gave the EP its first vinyl release in June 2018.
The EP won Best EP at the 2017 West Australian Music Industry Awards, and Donnelly won the inaugural Levi's Music Prize at Bigsound that year. "Boys Will Be Boys" addresses the blaming of victims of sexual assault; The New York Times described it as a delicate waltz carrying a bitter reproach. "Mechanical Bull" draws on her experiences of sexism while working in hospitality.
