Black Vinyl 2LP With Bonus Ultramega EP

This is the standard black vinyl edition of Sub Pop's expanded reissue of Ultramega OK, catalog number SP1172, issued in the US on March 10, 2017. The first LP holds the remixed album at 33 1/3 RPM; the second is a 12-inch 45 RPM record carrying the six-song Ultramega EP. Ted Jensen mastered the reissue at Sterling Sound, where Ray Janos cut the lacquers. The records come in a gatefold jacket with photographic dust sleeves, and the cover photo is Lance Mercer's, as on the 1988 original.

Ultramega OK was Soundgarden's first full-length album, released by SST Records in October 1988. It was recorded that spring with producer Drew Canulette, using the Dogfish Mobile Unit in Seattle and in Newberg, Oregon. The band was unhappy with the final mix; Chris Cornell later said "the production wasn't what we were after at all, and that sort of hurt us critically." A remix planned soon after release was set aside when the band signed to A&M and began work on Louder Than Love. Once the band had recovered the original multitrack tapes, Jack Endino remixed the album at Soundhouse in Seattle, with Kim Thayil supervising.

The second disc collects six early versions recorded in 1987 on eight-track tape by Endino and Chris Hanzsek at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, the demo the band called the Ultramega EP. The lineup throughout is Cornell on vocals, Thayil on guitar, Hiro Yamamoto on bass and Matt Cameron on drums; Yamamoto sings "Circle Of Power," and the album covers Chester Burnett's "Smokestack Lightning." "Flower" was the album's only single, and Ultramega OK was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 1990 Grammy Awards. The 2017 reissue reached No. 8 on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart.
