Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram LP in Tip-On Jacket

This is the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series edition of Way Out West, issued by Craft Recordings on December 6, 2024. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original master tapes in an all-analog (AAA) chain, and the record is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and housed in a tip-on jacket. Grundman is a former Contemporary Records employee, so the label's catalog is being mastered by one of its own alumni.

Craft runs the series together with Acoustic Sounds, with Chad Kassem as series supervisor. The program launched in the spring of 2022, and Way Out West closed its 2024 slate of twelve reissues.

The jacket follows the stereo issue: the front carries the "In Stereo" lettering and the Stereo Records imprint, credited "In Association with Contemporary Records." The back reproduces producer Lester Koenig's liner notes, dated June 6, 1957, along with the original technical data panel and the composer credits for each side.

Rollins recorded the album at Contemporary's Los Angeles studio on March 7, 1957, with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, neither of whom had played with him before. The session was called for 3 a.m. to fit around everyone's working schedules, and it was the first time Rollins recorded with only bass and drums, no piano or guitar behind him. Koenig produced and Roy DuNann engineered. William Claxton shot the cover in the desert, with Rollins in a Stetson and an empty holster; the costume was Rollins' own idea, marking his first trip West.

The program pairs two western songs, Johnny Mercer's "I'm an Old Cowhand" and "Wagon Wheels," with Duke Ellington's "Solitude," Isham Jones' "There Is No Greater Love" and two Rollins originals. Craft notes that the album holds five stars in The Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide.
