RockBeat Records issued this LP for Record Store Day 2017, limited to 950 copies and packaged with a download card (catalog ROC-3389). Randy Perry mastered it and David Skye produced the reissue. One note for buyers: the sleeve and label list "A True Friend Is Hard To Find" as track A4, but the song is not on this pressing.
The recording captures Son House in concert at Oberlin College in Ohio on April 15, 1965. Between songs he talks to the audience about his life and what the blues mean to him, and the set includes long readings of "Preachin' the Blues" and "Change Your Mind." The concert was first issued on LP in 1981 by Stack-O-Hits under the title In Concert.
House was born in Lyon, Mississippi, in 1902 and cut his first records for Paramount in 1930; Alan Lomax recorded him for the Library of Congress in 1941 and 1942. He left music in the 1940s and was found working at a train station in Rochester, New York, in 1964 by Nick Perls, Dick Waterman and Phil Spiro. Alan Wilson, later of Canned Heat, helped him relearn his own style, and Columbia released Father of Folk Blues the year of this concert.
