Decca Pure Analogue Series, All-Analogue 180 Gram Pressing
Sir Colin Davis recorded Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Grote Zaal of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, in 1974. Philips made the recording in quadraphonic sound, with Vittorio Negri producing and Ko Witteveen engineering, and issued it on LP as Philips 6500 774. The sleeve reproduces the original artwork and the disc carries the Philips label.
Decca sets out the mastering for this edition in unusual detail. Rainer Maillard at Emil Berliner Studios worked from the original half-inch four-track quadraphonic master tape, making a new stereo mix sent directly to the cutter head so the signal path stays analogue end to end. Philips engineers in the 1970s would have folded the four channels down the same way, but their downmix produced a two-track stereo copy for mastering; here the lacquer is cut from a live mix off the quadraphonic master. Sidney C. Meyer cut the lacquer.
Decca Pure Analogue is the label's all-analogue vinyl series, drawn from the Decca and Philips archives. The record is manufactured on 180 gram heavyweight virgin vinyl at Schallplattenfabrik Pallas in Germany and arrives in a deluxe gatefold sleeve carrying the original liner notes, archival photographs and facsimiles of the original recording session sheets, alongside notes written for this release by Dominic Fyfe, A&R Director of Decca Classics.
Gramophone's review called it "one of the most tantalising records I have had to review... here at last is the version of the Symphonie fantastique we have all been waiting for from our, and the world's, principal Berlioz conductor."
