Remastered 2LP Reissue With Bonus CD, Limited First Edition Of 1,500

Comedy Minus One's reissue of Firewater (catalog number CMO053) spreads the album across two LPs and adds a CD that carries the full album plus nearly 20 minutes of additional material, some of it previously unheard, including an alternate take of "Don't Make Plans This Friday" with its original lyrics. A download code is included as well. The label notes that its licensing agreement with Matador allows Firewater only in this 2LP-plus-CD configuration. Each LP sits in a full-color Stoughton sleeve inside a jacket built around Hiroshi Kimura's paintings, with the reissue design and packaging by David Babbitt. The audio was remastered with Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service, and the records were manufactured at Paramount Pressing, with the first edition limited to 1,500 copies.

Firewater was Silkworm's first album for Matador Records, released in 1996 after the band had become a trio of Tim Midyett, Andy Cohen and Michael Dahlquist following Joel RL Phelps' departure. Steve Albini recorded it at KUFM in Montana, at his home, and at Chicago Recording Company. The label opens its announcement with a line from Stephen Malkmus: "Scorched tales of Manifest Destiny from the best to do it... Montana Bar Rock of the highest order."

The reissue also prints new notes from Midyett, who calls Firewater the most ambitious record in the band's catalog and "an hour of music in one gulp." He writes that with three members left, "the possibilities somehow expanded even as our number contracted," leaving more room for Cohen's guitar and for Dahlquist's drumming, and he still names "Nerves" as the single.
