Loser Edition Sky Blue & Opaque Red 2LP, 30th Anniversary Expanded Edition

This is Sub Pop's Loser Edition of the 30th anniversary expansion of Harmacy, pressed across two colored LPs, one sky blue and one opaque red. It carries the original 19-song album followed by 16 bonus tracks: four alternate versions, the studio B-side "Real Deal," BBC sessions recorded for Radio 1 and for John Peel, an acoustic demo of "Open Ended" and six live recordings from the Harmacy era. Stereogum's report of the announcement notes the audio was retouched and remastered by JJ Golden at Golden Mastering.

Harmacy was Sebadoh's sixth album, released by Sub Pop on August 20, 1996. The band formed in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1986 around Lou Barlow and Eric Gaffney; Jason Loewenstein joined in 1989, and Bob Fay took Gaffney's place in 1994. The songs were cut at several rooms, among them Fort Apache, Q Division, Newbury Sound and a house in Osterville, Massachusetts, with Wally Gagel, Tim O'Heir and Eric Masunaga engineering and Bryce Goggin among the mixers. Loewenstein took the cover photo on tour: a pharmacy in Cashel, Ireland, whose sign had lost its P.

Sub Pop notes that Harmacy arrived in the wake of the Folk Implosion's Top 40 hit "Natural One" and became Sebadoh's first charting album in the US. It peaked at No. 126 on the Billboard 200 and No. 38 in the UK. "Ocean" climbed to No. 23 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks, and "Beauty Of The Ride" reached No. 74 on the UK Singles Chart. Rolling Stone placed the album eighth among its ten best of 1996, and it also appeared in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll and NME's critics' list that year. Interview called it "nothing short of a masterpiece." Barlow later told Stereogum, in 2012, that the record "just really didn't take off the way it should have."
