Indie Exclusive Black & White Splatter Vinyl 2LP At 45 RPM

This is Fire Records' limited edition "Evil" Black & White Splatter pressing of The Evil One, issued for independent record stores. All 15 songs from the 1978 and 1979 sessions are spread across two LPs cut at 45 rpm, and the jacket restores the front cover of the 1981 US edition on San Francisco's 415 Records, out of use since that year. A collector's booklet carries a new essay by Austin music journalist Joe Nick Patoski, who sat in on one of the 1979 sessions, alongside photographs from the archive of Craig Luckin, Erickson's manager at the time and the album's executive producer.

Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook produced the sessions, which began in December 1978 at The Church, a studio in Marin County, and were interrupted when Erickson was hospitalized. His vocals were finished at Hound Sound in Austin in April 1979. Fifteen songs were completed and neither original release used them all: CBS issued a ten-song edition in the UK in 1980 under the name Roky Erickson and the Aliens, and 415 Records issued a different ten-song selection in the US in 1981 as The Evil One. This edition gathers all fifteen.

After his release from Rusk State Hospital, Erickson assembled the band that became the Aliens and reworked songs he had written there into horror-themed lyrics. "Creature With The Atom Brain" borrows its title from a 1955 film. The band was Erickson on vocals and guitar, Duane Aslaksen on guitar, Billy Miller on electric autoharp, Steven Morgan Burgess on bass and Fuzzy Furioso on drums, with Cook playing bass on "Bloody Hammer" and "Sputnik."

Ghost, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age have all recorded its songs. AllMusic's Mark Deming called the album the best representation of Erickson's "latter-day punk" period, and Luckin has said Erickson considered it his favorite of everything he recorded. Fire Records presents the reissue as the first in a series that continues with Gremlins Have Pictures and Don't Slander Me.
