Indie Exclusive Black Splatter 2LP With Autographed Insert

This is the independent-retail edition of Hippies, Thugs and Heroes: two LPs pressed on black splatter vinyl, carrying the album's twelve songs across three sides with the fourth left blank, in a gatefold jacket. Each copy includes an insert autographed by Richard Thompson. New West Records issues the album in the US.

It is Thompson's 20th studio album, six decades after his start with Fairport Convention, and it follows Ship to Shore, which Uncut named among the best albums of 2024. Thompson produced it with James Frazee at Hobosound Studio in Weehawken, New Jersey, near his home. The band cut the songs live, usually in two to four takes: Taras Prodaniuk on bass, Michael Jerome on drums, David Mansfield on guitar and fiddle, and Zara Phillips, Thompson's wife, on backing vocals.

The groundwork was laid at home. Thompson made detailed demos, playing the drum parts himself, and has said, "It's so much fun to mess around at home and disappear down in the basement for hours at a time." He describes the finished record as "less them and more me." New West's notes trace the opener, "Sorcerer's Apprentice," to Thompson's own history with 1970s spiritual movements. The first single, "Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking," follows a cast of London hustlers that includes a young woman overwhelmed by the city, a soldier who quotes Shakespeare, a King's Road hippie and a thug; the label's official lyric video is above.
