100% Recycled Black Vinyl

The vinyl edition of Hope Is the Thing with Feathers is a single black LP, and Nonesuch specifies that it is pressed from 100% recycled vinyl and is carbon neutral. Its jacket carries the album's cover, a six-by-six-foot patchwork quilt made by textile artist Uzoma Samuel Anyanwu from a photograph of Giddens by Ebru Yildiz, with design by Barbara de Wilde.

Giddens sings lead and plays minstrel banjo and fiddle at the head of a band drawn from across her career: longtime bassist Jason Sypher, Francesco Turrisi on accordion and percussion, Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, Dirk Powell on multiple instruments, her first bandmate and fellow North Carolinian Justin Robinson on vocals and fiddle, Amelia Powell on acoustic guitar and vocals, Charly Lowry on vocals and percussion, her nephew Justin Harrington on bones, and her sister Lalenja Harrington. Brady Blade and Bill Smith are also credited on the album.

Four of the ten songs are originals written by Giddens and Dirk Powell, among them the lead single "Carolina Rain," which Nonesuch's announcement describes as a song about love and money. The rest of the program reaches back to Ola Belle Reed's "High on a Mountain," Pura Fé's "Going Home," and the traditional "Cluck Old Hen" and "Walk with Me."

Giddens wrote the libretto for Omar, an opera based on the life and autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, a Muslim scholar enslaved and brought to Charleston in 1807; she and composer Michael Abels shared the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Music for it. She is also a MacArthur Fellow.
