Black Vinyl 4LP Box Set

This is the standard black-vinyl box of Stadium Arcadium on Warner Records, catalog number 9362-44391-1: four LPs in two full-color double gatefold jackets, held in a slipcase. The first box appeared in 2006, and Discogs lists US represses under this barcode in 2016 and 2020. Discs one and two carry the Jupiter half of the album and discs three and four carry Mars, 28 songs over eight sides. Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray are credited with the vinyl mastering, and Wikipedia notes that the vinyl version uses an alternate guitar solo on "Especially In Michigan."

The band recorded the album between 2004 and 2005 with Rick Rubin, mainly at The Mansion in Laurel Canyon, where they had made Blood Sugar Sex Magik, with further work at Sound City in Van Nuys. Ryan Hewitt and Andrew Scheps engineered and mixed. The songs were first meant for three separate albums released six months apart; the band recorded 38 and cut them down to a double album, a process Anthony Kiedis called "heartwrenching." Warner Bros. released it in the US on May 9, 2006.

Kiedis sings, John Frusciante plays guitars, keyboards, synthesizer and Mellotron, Flea plays bass and trumpet, and Chad Smith plays drums and percussion. Billy Preston adds clavinet on "Warlocks." "It was very clear to me that the music was coming from somewhere other than me," Frusciante said of the sessions. The record became the band's first No. 1 album in the US, where it has been certified four times platinum, and "Dani California," the opening song and the video above, held the top of Billboard's Alternative Songs chart for 14 weeks.
