Remastered Black Vinyl 2LP in a Gatefold Jacket

This is the 2016 High Water Records double LP of Sound Machine Groove, catalog HWX 3722, pressed at Memphis Record Pressing and housed in a gatefold jacket. Jeff Powell remastered the recordings for vinyl and cut the lacquers, Ben Yonas produced the double-LP edition, and David Evans, who made the original recordings, contributes liner notes. A translucent Memphis Blue edition was issued later under a different barcode.

Evans, a folklorist, founded High Water with Memphis State University in 1979 and recorded Burnside for the label in 1979 and 1980. These were Burnside's first recordings with electric guitar and his first with a band, the Sound Machine, which he built from his own family: sons Daniel and Joseph on guitar and bass, with son-in-law Calvin Jackson on drums.

The songs set newer material like "Bad Luck City," "Can't Let You Go" and the title track beside slower traditional pieces such as "Going Down South" and "Begged for a Nickel." Burnside plays slide on "Sitting on Top of the World," and his duets with Jackson close the record. The material first surfaced in 1981, as a High Water EP that got little distribution in the US and as a full album licensed to Disques Vogue in Europe.

Burnside was born in Harmontown, Mississippi, in 1926 and died in Memphis in 2005. From 1991 until his death he recorded for Fat Possum, more than a decade after these sessions.
